SHIZEN
This project is an attempt to capture the Japanese concept of nature, shizen. Through my photographs, I explore the intimate relationship of the Japanese people with the land they inhabit and with nature they believe to be the manifestation of the sacred.
Influenced by indigenous Shinto beliefs and by Buddhism, which arrived from China in the 6th century, Japanese culture has grown to cherish harmony between all sentient beings that form part of the natural world. Both religions inspire a profound appreciation of the mystical beauty and wisdom present in nature; both foster a keen awareness of its fragility and impermanence.
